Overview


The story of Sishya is the story of how one man's vision was transformed through his dedication & perseverance in the face of odds, through the support of parents and students as well the community at large, into a premier institution providing quality education in Chennai.

Retiring from the Lawrence School, Lovedale, Ooty Mr. K. I .Thomas, the founder of Sishya, began a nursery-cum-preparatory school in January 1972. With just 28 pupils on its rolls then, Sishya today has over 1166 students. Drawn from all parts of the country, the students of Sishya have found, a common ground of trust and friendship, irrespective of caste, creed or religion.

Infrastructure

The school has a state of the art Library with a Multimedia Section and Audiovisual Room. There are fully equipped Laboratories for Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science. To stimulate the minds of younger children, there is a separate Junior Science Lab. There is also a specialized Art Department.

Extra Curricular Activities

Primary School comprises LKG to Class I. The method of instruction in the Primary School is “Learning through Play” and is a combination of the traditional and the Montessori. The children are encouraged to explore and discover things on their own through various hands-on activities. This develops the child’s observation skills, teamwork and creativity. The spirit of sharing and fair play is also encouraged. Junior School comprises Classes 2 to 5. Here, the main emphasis is on the all round development of the child. The academic, social and behavioural aspect takes centre stage. Children are exposed to various activities which allow them to discover where their interests lie. Classes 6 to 8 is the Middle School. Students now enter the portals of the Senior School. They are encouraged to be independent and work on their own. They use the facilities available in the library, -books and the internet- to do reference work for various class projects and for individual subjects. The emphasis on all round development continues. A schedule of after school activities is compulsory. Children sign up to play a Sport like hockey, basketball, etc. and join a Club activity like The Environmental Club, Aeromodelling etc. from Monday to Thursday. Classes 9 to 12 make up Senior School. Academics become more structured. The syllabus followed is laid down by the Council. These years are the most crucial years of a students life in school. It is a time when decisions are made – decisions regarding which subjects to opt for in Group 3 for Classes 9 & 10 and what group to select in +2. The school has an advanced Careers Counselling programme in place to help in making the right decision.

Additional Details

In 1997, on the school’s Silver Jubilee, the new Library Block was inaugurated and named The Thangam Thomas Library Block after one of the school’s co – founders. This building houses the Library including an extensive multi media computer section, the Art Dept. and the classrooms for the Plus 1 and Plus 2 Sections. The moving of the Plus 2 classes created more space in the Senior Block and a new Biology Lab. was opened. In the following years, the Management found that owing to lack of space, we were turning away many children who would have done the school proud. After much debate, it was decided to add a third section to each class. Each section would have only 30 children so that the school would have the benefit of more admissions while keeping the strength of each section to an optimum number of students.
