What is the test about?

UPSC Combined Geo-Scientists and Geologists Entrance Examination will be conducted by the Union Public Service Commission to test the merit of candidates who wish to apply for vacancies in the Geological Survey of India and the Central Ground Water Board.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility:

Nationality

The Candidate should either

  • hold nationality of India; or
  • be a subject of Bhutan; or
  • be a subject of Nepal; or
  • be of Indian origin but have migrated either from the East African countries of Sri Lanka, Kenya, Burma, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam; or,
  • be among Tibetan refugees who had come into the country before the 1st of January 1962 for settling here permanently.

Age Criteria

For Geologist and Geophysicist and Chemist (Group ‘A’) in the Geological Survey of India, Ministry of Mines:

Candidates’ date of birth should fall not before than the 2nd of January 1986 and not after the 1st of January 1997.

For Jr. Hydrogeologist (Scientist B) (Group A) in Central Ground water Board, Ministry of Water Resources:

Candidates’ date of birth should fall not before the 2nd of January 1983 and not after the 1st of January 1997.

Age relaxation for reserved category candidates:

  • Ex-servicemen category candidates -- 5 years
  • Scheduled caste/Scheduled tribe Candidates -- 5 years
  • OBC -- 3 years
  • Deaf-mute, Blind, and Orthopedically disabled category Candidates -- 10 years

Educational Criteria

For Geologists Group ‘A’ in Geological Survey of India:

A Master’s Degree in Geological Science or Geology or Applied Geology or Geo-Exploration or Mineral Exploration or Engineering Geology or Earth Science and Resource Management or Marine Geology or Oceanography and Geochemistry or Geological Technology or Coastal Area Studies or Petroleum Geosciences or Petroleum Exploration or Geophysical Technology.

For Chemists Group ‘A ‘in Geological Survey of India: 

A M.Sc. Degree in Analytical Chemistry or Chemistry or Applied Chemistry.

For Geophysicists Group ‘A’ in Geological Survey of India:

A M.Sc. (Tech.) (Applied Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Applied Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Marine Geophysics) or Integrated M.Sc. (Exploration Geophysics) or M.Sc. in Physics or Applied Physics or M.Sc. Physics or M.Sc. (Geophysics) Degree.

What are the test syllabus, duration and format?

UPSC Combined Geoscientist and Geologist 2018 Exam Pattern:

  • Two major parts of the question paper -- Part I and Part II.
  • Part 1 -- Written test. Part II -- Interview/Personality test.
  • The General English Paper is of 100 marks and it will be common to all the categories of candidates.
