Amrita Vidyalayam, Chennai was started in 1990 in the Chennai Ashram premises with a strength of 20 students. The school received its affiliation with the CBSE in 2001. In 1997, the school shifted to the new school building in the present premises, and it was inaugurated by H H Swami Ramakrishnanda Puri , Treasurer, Mata Amritanandamayi Math. The Secondary section began in 2001 and the Senior Secondary Section in 2005. The school has more than 2000 students. The school has classes from PreKG to class XII.

Junior Labs : A junior science lab and a junior math lab give opportunities to the children to learn every concept through hands-on activities. Students’ creativity and observation are nurtured through such activities and the scientific temperament is slowly nurtured and polished. Creativity is encouraged at all levels and every creative activity is recognized and applauded.
Computer Labs : Students design a picture through paint brush and write a story appropriate for that picture at the primary level while students at the middle school level make power point presentations related to seminar study or introduction of a topic. Students at the Secondary and Senior Secondary levels are involved in designing newsletters and programming. Every student and teacher is encouraged to be computer literate to ensure that progressive education is available to all.
Focus on Value Education : All Amrita Vidyalayams impart an education that is embedded in our rich cultural heritage and a universally acclaimed value system. Students are encouraged to systematic chanting of Sanskrit slokas keeping in mind the fact that Sanskrit pronunciation improves the general pronunciation of every child. From the primary level students are exposed to Panchatantra tales, Puranic Tales, Bhagawata Purana, The Ramayana, Mahabharata and also later on the Bhagawad Gita. Students learn about the importance of values in our culture, get to know fact about Indian music, dance, sculpture, Vasthushastra, Ayurveda and the role played by such mahatmas like Adi Sankara, Ramanjua, Tyagaraja and the like, scientific knowledge and mastery which our forefathers had and the richness and prosperity that was available in the accommodative life style they practised. Amma believes that nurturing a high value sense in these children will go a long way in nurturing a value based society in the days to come.
Art Education : Students are trained in Music, Dance, Mridangam, Art and Craft and in cookery from class 3 onwards. It is expected that every child should master at least one of these art forms before they complete class 10. These students are given special preference to perform during School Annual Days and on special occasions.
Physical Education -- CBSE Primary Physical Education Programme This is a new programme by CBSE in collaboration with British Council, United Kingdom where Physical Education cards are being used as tools for providing inclusive and interesting experiences to the children at the primary stage, thus facilitating the process of engaging them intensively in games and activities focusing particularly on agility, balance, coordination, speed and strength. Each card is devoted a particular set of activities aimed at agility, balance and coordination for classes I – III, and agility, balance, coordination, speed and strength for classes IV and V. The cards have been designed to be used by non specialist primary teachers, with the support of specialist physical education teachers
Our students are also being given coaching after school hours in Chess, Volleyball, Swimming (yet to start), Koko and Athletics. We have National level participants in Volleyball and National level winners in Swimming.
National/ International level Competitions / Examinations : a. Our students take the ASSET National level Exam conducted by Educational Initiatives and perform fairly well. b. Our students are preparing for the YLExamination of Cambridge University which is organized by the British Council, Chennai. c. Our students take the CBSE Olympiads in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. They also take the CBSE Informatics Olympiad, d. Our students also prepare for the NTSE and KVPY exams conducted by the government. e. Our students take the Science Olympiad exams conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation in addition to their Mathematics Olympiad and the Cyber Olympiad.
