The School originally began as a Ladies' Club - hence the name Mylapore Ladies Club (MLC) School Society It first started as a kindergarten for the boys of the area. This was in February 1956. The first president of the society was Sister Subbalakshmi, who was supported by Shri Subbaraya Aiyar, a leading lawyer of his time, and Mrs. Padmini Chari, Educationist. Thus the school was born on the 3rd of February 1956, through the efforts of the three, and Vidya Mandir Matriculation School was formally opened in 1960.

Extra Curricular Activities
Mr R S Mani is the Scout Master, the scouts take an active participation during all school functions.
Dance: Conducted by Mrs. Roja Venkatachalam on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3.00 pm – 4.30 pm in the Primary GC room
Music: Conducted by Mrs. V. Nandini on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3.00 pm – 4.30 pm in the Primary Language room
Karate: Conducted by Sensei S. Vikram on Saturdays and Sundays from 2.30 pm – 4.00 pm in the Primary Block
Arts: Conducted by Mrs. Vidya on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3.15 pm – 4.15 pm in Class 2 A.
Theatre: A theatre workshop is conducted by Alchemy Kids Theatre (AKT) for classes 6 to 8 on Thursdays and classes 9 to 11 on Fridays. Classes will be held in school between 3.15pm and 4.15pm. The students will have the oppurtunity to train for the Trinity College of London - Certificate in Speech and Drama Exams.
RSP: The school has an active RSP group comprising of around 60 cadets under the guidance and training of Mr. V. Vishwanathan (Teacher and Traffic Warden). They control the flow of traffic near the school main gate and Kalvivaru Street. The functioning of RSP has made the flow of traffic easy. From 2009 onwards, many of our cadets have been selected for the state Republic Day Parade held at Marina.
Cricket: The School is very well-recognized in cricketing circles and TNCA coaches offer training. Classes are conducted for different age group of student from 3.30pm to 5.30 pm on all days. For the past 7 years we have been holding a prestigious tournament sponsored by Sportstar for the Under 13 category.
Table Tennis: Coaching is offered for students (Std 3 to Std 12) on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday by Mr. Prasad (Mob: 9444117677) from 3.15 pm to 4.30 pm in the Sripad Hall.
Chess: Coaching is offered from Monday to Friday by Mr. Rangan and Mr. Anand from 3.15 pm to 4.30 pm in the room next to the PT room.
Football: Coaching is offered for students (Std 6 to Std 12) from Monday to Saturday by coach, Mr.David (Mob: 9840849445), from 3.15 pm to 4.30 pm in the VM Field. We have senior and junior boys team being coached along with the addition of a new girls team!
Basket ball: Basketball coaching is offered for students (Std 4 to Std 12) from Monday to Friday by coach Mrs. Sunitha Suren (Mob: 9840125594) from 3.15 pm to 4.30 pm in the VM Basketball court.
For the past 5 years we have been hosting an invitation Basketball inter school tournament sponsored and conducted by the PTA
The MLC School Society was registered in 1957, and the properties of the club were transferred to it. Sister R. S. Subbalakshmi and Mrs V K T Chari, were Founder President and Correspondent respectively, Shri. M Subbaraya Aiyar became the secretary of the school.
In these 5 decades, Vidya Mandir has taken giant strides as an educational institution. The school's vision was so farsighted that it holds good even today. Although started for boys, it is today a coeducational school with over 2000 students , 100 teachers, and 35 support staff.
