Modern High School for Girls, committed to developing creative and independent individuals, was founded by Mrs. B.M. Birla on January 3 1952. The School was set up at 28, Camac Street initially with Mrs. Violet Clarke as the first Principal. In 1953, the senior school moved to a new location 33, Theatre Road (now Shakespeare Sarani), Calcutta (now Kolkata). The junior school remained at the same location.
The foundation stone for the present school building was laid by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. B.C. Roy on December 9, 1957 and in March 1960; the senior school was transferred to the present building at 78, Syed Amir Ali Avenue.
The school had efficient Headmistresses all along. Mrs. Clarke was followed by Mrs Rebeiro during the early 60’s, followed by Mrs. Pastakia from 1963-65. Mrs I.L. Wilson de Roze was Headmistress for the longest period, from 1965-2000. Mrs. D. Kar, joined in April, 2000 as Principal and now our Director after Mrs. Kaveri Dutt has become our Principal since April 2012.

Planetarium: MHS is probably the only school with its own planetarium. Students are exposed to the wonders of the sky and universe through a variety of shows.
Computer Laboratory: There are two Computer Laboratories in the school. They are exclusive and equipped with computers and accessories in tune with the latest technologies.
Laboratory: The school houses 5 laboratories namely for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography and Home Science. All the laboratories are well-equipped helping students to complete their experiments without any difficulty.
Library: The school has an excellent library - well stocked and with a wide range of titles. It is continuously updated keeping the benefit of the students in mind.
Canteen: It provides a wide range of healthy and wholesome food at reasonable rates. Fruit juices and lassi are also on the menu.
Conference Room: it is located on the ground floor.
Goethe Zimmer - German Language Room : it is located on the top floor.
Sports Ground: Although the school is located in the heart of the city it has spacious grounds, a playing field and basketball courts,including a hard court.
Multipurpose Hall: – ‘The Shed’: This serves as an informal auditorium (popularly known as the "shed").It now has a State of the Art. sound-proofing system, a mobile stage, special lighting arrangements and a central air-conditioning system. Gymnasium: It is centrally air-conditioned and equipped with the latest exercising and fitness machines.
Audio-visual Room: There are two audio-visual rooms, one on the ground floor and another one on the fifth floor fitted with computers, overhead projectors and a Smart Board.
Art Lab: The Art Lab has been renovated recently. It is now more spacious and with modern amenities.

In the academic field MHS created history in 1968 when Malabika Chakravarty - a Humanities student, broke all records and stood first among all the groups in the Higher Secondary Exams. Throughout, girls in different batches have secured ranks in the Secondary and Higher Secondary Examinations.
In 1985, 'Maitree', the inter-school fest organized by classes XI and XII, was held for the first time at the Ice Skating Rink. In March 1987, the foundation stone for the Science Hall with the Planetarium was laid. Computer classes started in the Science Hall from February 1988, after its inauguration. Modern High School celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2002.
The school is affiliated to the CISCE. Students appear for ICSE and ISC examinations at the end of class X and XII respectively.
