How N. P. D. S. is different from other Schools
Inspired by the charisma of St. Jude, St. Jude's High School was established as a Catholic English Medium School. While the prime purpose of the establishment of St. Jude's High School was the education of pupils of all faiths, irrespective of caste, creed or community, helping them to achieve all round development namely physical, mental and spiritual, moulding them into fit and worthy citizens of our motherland – India. St. Jude's High School is a learning community which has St. Jude's as its central motivating force. His values, as expressed in the beatitudes and summed up with the virtues of love, sincerity, justice and freedom will so permeate the atmosphere that students of all social background, even the most deprived ones, of all religions, feel welcome in the loving warmth which cherishes even as it challenges. The School will foster all round growth and development of each student to his/her full potential – spiritually, intellectually and physically; it will guide them in the development of a sound value system and will inculcate in them a deep love and appreciation for their culture and country. The school will try to create an atmosphere in which the student finds scope within their own cultural milieu to reflect on their life and to develop not only in the knowledge and skills but also in that wisdom which is the fruit of life and its lessons. The education imparted is characterised by thoroughness, high principles and freedom. The student is helped to grow in responsibility, self – guidance and human maturity, so that they find meaning and purpose in their life and is inspired to live and work for the building of a just and fraternal society. Hence the idea of service is set before the pupil who is trained to be concerned for others, to be aware of their needs and to make sacrifices when necessary, to share what they have with the less privileged. Efforts will therefore be needed to instil a sense of community rather than a spirit of competition. It is hoped that our pupils will find in Saint Jude a fitting model for emulation, which is summed up in the slogan of our school i.e. "Integer Vitae" meaning "The Integrated Life".
In 1848, The Christian Brothers Missionaries of Ireland founded the Calcutta Male Orphanage at Murghihata, Kolkata. In 1947, it came to the present expansive campus in Dum Dum and was named St. Mary's Orphanage and Day School. Thereafter, the school also came to serve day scholars from all strata of the society irrespective of caste and religion. Gradually the school became a most sought after educational institution in the northern and eastern part of Kolkata and North 24-Parganas District.
The campus, comprising two lush green sprawling football fields, well-built class rooms, an auditorium, basketball courts, skating rinks, parks and a swimming pool has made it an ideal institution for overall development of the child. Added to this is a high quality education and extra-curricular activities.
Recently, the school introduced Classes XI and XII too. Over the years, the school has produced excellent academic results. Most of the ex-students have excelled in their careers and are now successfully placed as doctors, engineers, research scholars, lawyers, professors, entrepreneurs, artists, corporates, journalists, social activists and in numerous other fields throughout the world.
The school is managed by the Suburban Educational Society, a non-profit organization registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act of 1961. The Society consists of educators and social workers and its Executive Committee forms the Managing Committee of the school by nomination. The Managing Committee of the school is guided by the Executive Committee and answers to it.
The canopy of the school was embedded with 50 children and 5 teachers at 15, Park Street in the year 1975 and in 1980 the institution shifted to its present building. Now we can boast of more than 2000 happy children. In 1986 our batch of children for secondary examinations (CBSE) were sent. In 1998 we sent our first batch of students for senior secondary examination (CBSE) in three streams-Humanities, Science and Commerce examination. The growth of the school from 50 students and 5 teachers to its present strength would not have been possible without the active involvement and encouragement from a very positive school Managing Committee headed by Late Mr. Jit Paul andMrs. Shirin Paul (Chairperson) . We intend to spread our umbrella with a galaxy of schools all over Kolkata.

Loreto Bowbazar was established in 1844 on the 8th of December. It was known as St. Francis Xavier Convent. It was originally a small private school owned by Mr. & Mrs. Cooper. There were boarders from the middle income group, who paid their fees. A Free school was also running parallel to the paid school. There were both boys and girls. In 1845 the Christian Brothers took charge of the boys. LBB was the second assignment for the young Loreto Sisters who came to India from Ireland. The Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary 15, Portuguese Church Street, Kolkota 700001 being the first port of call after reaching India in 1841 on the 30th of December. In 1845 the Loreto sisters were asked to help in the Medical College Hospital temporarily. The sisters managed the domestic & household duties. They managed the provisions & looked after the ladies in the Female Ward. This arrangement proved to be economical for the doctors. In 1857 the year of the Mutiny, there was a rumour that trouble might spread to Calcutta. The people from the suburbs were removed to Fort William area and the orphans and Sisters from Loreto Entally were moved to Loreto Bowbazar. In 1882 the school in Bowbazar was operating from a house given by M. Cooper was given to the free section of St. Joseph. A new property was acquired for the 300 children of Loreto Bowbazar. In 1882 the premises of Loreto Bowbazar was completed. The Concert Hall and other improvements were made. The building grant sanctioned by the government was not sufficient therefore it had to be supplemented by Dr. Goethals. They still needed money for furniture and additional Halls. In 1884 the new Church was built on the ground of the free school. A free school was to be built on a new plot. At that time, the only middle school scholarship opened to competition, was won by Loreto Bowbazar. Among the primary scholarships also LBB won two. LBB was always affiliated to the Education Department of the State. The school leaving certificate then known as Metric later called the Madhyamik Pariksha of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Examination. In 1976 the first batch appeared for the Higher Secondary Examination of the West Bengal Education Council. Until 1986 there was also the Modern School Final Examination conducted by the West Bengal Government. In 1990 a literacy programme for the street children began. The idea was to make the girls self sufficient by offering them opportunity to train as housekeepers or house wives and mothers who would be capable of handling their home and children. Though it did not take off in a big way we hope to revive it.
Loreto Day School was founded on the 10th of January 1956 by S.M. Gertrude O'Keefe. This School is a Catholic Institution under the management of the Sisters of the Institute of The Blessed Virgin Mary (Loreto Sisters), which was founded by Mary Ward in the 17th century, who recognized the significance of education for women and the important role they play in society.
In 1821, Teresa Ball established the first House of the Institute in Ireland and called it Loreto, the name by which all the subsequent foundations made from Ireland are still known. In 1841, Loreto Sisters under the leadership of Delphine Hart came to India. The religious Order is now spread throughout the world and engages itself in many fields, including the education of girls
