Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha, (MKSSS), Pune: - the 117-year-old parent body has been committed to “Empowerment of women through education”. The Institution has a century long history of dedicated work towards making women educated and self-reliant. MKSSS, Pune was established in 1896 by the great visionary and social worker Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve to provide shelter to destitute women. The Founder of the Institution: Prof. D. K. Karve founded an Institution in a village called “Hingne” near Pune City. The Institution was named as “Hingne Stree Shikshan Samstha”. Later, the Institution was renamed as “Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha”. Prof. Karve founded this Institution with the objectives of uplift, emancipation and education of women who formed a major section of the socially downtrodden. Prof. Karve dedicated his whole life for this humanitarian cause with great determination and courage. For his sacrifice and dedicated social work and his contribution to the noble cause he was awarded “Bharat Ratna” the highest national award. The Date of Establishment of the Institution: On 14th June in the year 1896, in the village ‘Hingne’ near Pune city, Maharshi Karve started a “Home for Widows”, along with a school for Widows, so that they become educated and self-reliant. He fought throughout his life to make this happen. The “Home for Widows” was then named as ‘Hingne Stree Shikshan Samstha’ and the school was named as ‘Mahilashram High School’. Development of the Institution: Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha, (MKSSS), Pune has diversified branches all over Maharashtra in India and about 25,000 girl students are learning in these institutions. Over the period of last 117 years, the Institution has grown like a banyan tree and at present, it is running 60 numbers of educational and other units. These units are located at Pune, Satara, Wai, Ratnagiri, Nagpur, Kamshet etc. All these units are meant only for girls or women. Around 25,000 girl students are learning in Kindergarten, Pre-Primary, Primary, Secondary, Higher Secondary schools and Colleges. We have established Engineering, Architecture, Management, Nursing, Fashion Technology, Vocational Training Institute, Health Center etc. These branches strive to develop women into truly performing citizens in today’s globalization era. We also have hostel facilities for students and working women and old age home for senior citizens.

Dr. Bhanuben Nanavati College of Architecture, (BNCA), Pune, educates students to be creative and technically skilled professionals. Architects are the ones who create the overall artistic look of a building and other structures. They require specific skills in engineering, managing, designing, supervision and communication with clients and builders. Architects spend a great amount of time explaining their ideas to clients, builders, construction contractors and others. BNCA offers 5 years full time B.Arch. course, apart from this 5 years full time course, they also conducts 2 years Post graduate courses which are M.Arch. (Landscape Architecture) and M.Arch. (Environmental Architecture) ,M.Arch. (Digital Architecture)curriculum of Pune University. The institute also conducts 3Yrs +1 year optional Autonomous Diploma in Computer Aided Interior Design. The college focuses on computer applications related to the field of architecture. The Students are updated on the current trends and happenings in the field of Architecture through seminars and guest lectures.
Competitions like Maharshi Karve Trophy and Kale Award, Chipalkatty Trophy have gained attraction of students from architecture colleges across the country. The architects trained here are working in organizations of international status.
BNCA provides residential accommodation for girls coming from all states of India. Adequate hostel facilities are available within the campus. All the hostel premises including the ones being run by hiring private hostels are provided with round the clock professional security, a doctor on call and hostel wardens. Recreation facilities like T.V., magazines, some indoor and outdoor games are also available at the hostels.

BNCA has launched a placement portal for the benefit of employers and students.
Students can use this portal for making applications to employers hiring from the college, communicating with the placement office, participating in on-campus / off-campus recruitment drives of employers. Employers can use this portal for signing up with the college placement office and hiring students. Employers can manage their profiles, post vacancies, schedule events and manage applications received. This placement portal serves as a communication platform between the employer, the college placement office and students.

4. Organizational Structure:

The Institution was established by Dr. D. K. Karve in the year 1896. The Institution is now 116 years old.
b. Nature of the Institution:
The Institution was established solely for the purpose of women’s education and their social uplift. It is an Educational Institution for girls and women, running different educational and other units for them.
c. Constitution of Management Committee:
The General Body of Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha is constituted by members consisting of Patrons, Benefactors, Sympathizers, Ordinary members and Life Workers. The President of the Samstha is elected out of Vice Presidents and Vice-Presidents are elected from amongst Patrons. The Management Committee is formed by elected members, trustees and life workers and employees representatives. All the properties of the Samstha, movable and immovable, are deemed to vest jointly in the names of Trustees of MKSSS, who are appointed by the General Body on the recommendation of President and Vice Presidents of the MKSSS.
The administration of the Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha is handled by the Management Committee which includes elected members, employee’s representatives, trustees and life workers of MKSSS. Hence the decision making system is very rugged. The Management Committee is responsible for taking up new projects and implementation of the projects. Decentralized and democratic way of management is the strength of MKSSS and is the sole success mantra for its smooth and efficient operations for last 116 years.

In the 18th century, social pattern in India was such that no women were going to schools for education. With the purposes of uplift, emancipation and education of women, who formed a major section of the socially downtrodden, Maharshi D. K. Karve founded an Institution called “Hingne Stree Shikshan Samstha”, in the year 1896. Prof. Karve dedicated his whole life for this humanitarian cause with great determination and courage.
b. Vision of the Parent Organization:
Bharat Ratna Maharshi Karve, a revered Visionary with extraordinary legacy of work in the field of women emancipation and education, is the inspiration and guiding soul behind the MKSSS’s vision of “Empowered Women playing equal role in Society and Nation building”. In keeping up with the vision, MKSSS strives to build a society of equal opportunities, social justice, a society where women will have their due importance, can live an enriched quality of life, a life of freedom and personal fulfillment. MKSSS works towards empowerment and enrichment of women through education, innovative training for life skills and job skills, pioneering the entry of women in new technology areas and new job domains.
